Our Ships in Papua New Guinea

Jaime Gomez News

Last week in Lae, Papua New Guinea, history was made. We retired the m/v PACIFIC LINK after an amazing 25 year run in YWAM. She started in Tauranga, New Zealand, then Townsville, Australia and finally Kona, Hawaii. What a strong steel lady she was. She has many great and beautiful stories to tell. It was a bittersweet moment for the YWAM community as our beloved vessel was decommissioned. She will be missed. We also commissioned the m/v YWAM LIBERTY! A passing of the baton to …

Racing Against Time

Jaime Gomez News

Christine, a ten-year-old girl had fallen from a tree the previous day. Tragically, she’d sustained a compound fracture to her left arm, leaving the bone sticking out of her skin. The young girl was in agonizing pain and at serious risk of losing her hand if she didn’t have surgery soon. Time is of the essence with this kind of injury. Ideally, compound fractures need surgery within a couple of hours to ensure full use of the limb and no further complications or infection. Unfortunately, …

What’s My Calling?

Jaime Gomez Stories

“So what are your plans here? What do you think God is calling you to next?” These are common breakfast table questions here at YWAM Ships Kona asked right after your name and where you grew up. It’s nice to be able to dive so deep initially with people but also is a difficult question for me to answer. Well ultimately, I’m heading to Heaven but there’s a good bit of life (hopefully) to grow, settle, and move through until that point. The question of …

The Open Door

Jaime Gomez Stories

Just yesterday I interviewed a Discipleship Training School student who had just returned from a 3 month outreach in Cambodia. He told me about a day they were walking in the slums, and a man came running at them fast and intense. They froze, took guard, thinking he was about to attack. To their surprise, the man called to them as he came closer, “Do you have a Bible? Do you have a Bible?” They expected antagonism, but instead found an intense hunger. The doors …

Her name is Mini Libby

Jaime Gomez Stories

Can I tell you a story? It all started on a Saturday. I was about to do laundry when I received a message from my friend Nick, asking me to stop by his place because he had something for me. Without having a car to drive, I would need to walk. It’s not far but walking in the middle of the day in the August heat is way too hot. So I was going to wait until Monday but Naomi, his wife, was willing to …

The Journey of Following God

Jaime Gomez Stories

Sitting down to join my fellow ladies at the local coffee shop, the thought hit me, “I don’t want to work here.” OH NO.  I had just turned in an application to work at that local coffee shop and, shortly after, realized I actually don’t want to be employed there. Before applying, I felt God had opened the doors for me to work part time. Since I had just joined YWAM Ships Kona as a full-time volunteer staff months prior, I was pumped when the …

A DTS Story – Part One: Thousands Raised To Do A DTS

Jaime Gomez Stories

My name’s Heather and I’m from the state of Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. I’m a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. My story of how I came to do a Discipleship Training School (DTS) and how I even ended up at Ships is quite interesting. You see, before coming to YWAM (Youth With A Mission), I honestly really didn’t understand God. I knew He existed, and I knew that I WANTED to know Him, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t realize you could actually have …

I Don’t Get A Paycheck

Jaime Gomez Stories

I haven’t had a paycheck in almost a full year. Ever since I was 16, I’ve always been employed in one way or another. I could always count on having enough in my bank account to cover my expenses, put money in savings, and still have the leeway to spend money on what I wanted. Willingly giving up the reliability of a paycheck every two weeks isn’t something that most people consider as a serious option. However, that reality is where God has led me, …

Adventure Comes From Risk: Saying Yes To Jesus

Jaime Gomez Stories

When my fiancé and I were first approached with an invitation to go to YWAM Ships Kona new ship, the m/v YWAM Liberty, to help get her ready for operation as a medical vessel, our reaction was to laugh loudly. The thought of packing up and heading out to Australia less than a month after we returned to Kona seemed ridiculous. We had barely settled back into our roles as base staff and we were looking forward to being back in our community. Once the …

What Am I Supposed To Do With My Life

Jaime Gomez Stories, Training

Junior college was something I did right after high school. Not because I wanted to, but because I didn’t know what else to do. I enjoyed the atmosphere of being in college but I wasn’t motivated to succeed. I didn’t know what to study so I enrolled in general education and would sometimes fail half the classes I signed up for. It ended up taking me twice as long to finish. The trouble was I didn’t have a desire for a degree and I had …

We Pay To Volunteer

Jaime Gomez Stories, Training

The concept of God’s provision is somewhat foreign in the world today. The standard most live by is to go to school, get a degree, work hard, pay bills, go on vacation, etc. All of which are good and necessary realities of life. The world continues to go around on its axis and day after day people go on with their lives. So what happens when the Lord calls a man to start a nonprofit, volunteer based mission organization fully dependent on Jesus providing all …
