Our Ships in Papua New Guinea

Jaime Gomez News

Last week in Lae, Papua New Guinea, history was made. We retired the m/v PACIFIC LINK after an amazing 25 year run in YWAM. She started in Tauranga, New Zealand, then Townsville, Australia and finally Kona, Hawaii. What a strong steel lady she was. She has many great and beautiful stories to tell. It was a bittersweet moment for the YWAM community as our beloved vessel was decommissioned. She will be missed. We also commissioned the m/v YWAM LIBERTY! A passing of the baton to …

Amanda in Papua New Guinea

Jaime Gomez Stories

I sat in the classroom, listening to the Discipleship Training School (DTS) students share stories from the outreaches they had just returned from. I was about to travel with my team to Papua New Guinea myself, so I listened carefully to the team that had just returned from there. One girl shared the story about her team visiting the local hospital and her personal trip to the maternity ward, where she had been asked to name a newborn baby.  I was really inspired by this …

Ending Bible Poverty in the Marshall Islands

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

There are some who passionately pursue the Lord’s will in all things. The ones who take their relationship with Christ seriously and will do anything that God asks them to do, even if that means leaving family and friends to be missionaries in another country.  Well, that’s us, a family of four who God asked to literally step out on the water (on a sailboat) and move to the Marshall Islands to share the love of God.  In April of 2013, we did a Family …

Snapshots from Abroad: Days as a Nurse in PNG

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

“My experience was amazing and would highly recommend getting involved.”   Lisa Maurette is a registered nurse from Brooks, Alberta, Canada. When asked by a friend about volunteering with Youth With A Mission (YWAM), she didn’t give it a second thought. The thing that drew her to helping with YWAM was the timing. “We only had a small window [of time]. We’re both moms, have jobs to negotiate and we were only able to go on a short term mission [trip] and it was preferable in …

Snapshots from Abroad: Short Time in PNG Touches the Heart

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

“Immediately my heart was stirred and I began to look into opportunities to serve.” Originally from Southern Alberta, Canada, Melanie Snider, Nurse Practioner, recently volunteered with one of our teams on board the m/v Pacific Link in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Having known about YWAM before from family and friends, it wasn’t until YWAM’s founder Loren Cunningham spoke about the medical ships ministry within the organization that Melanie’s heart began to stir. “I have always had a heart for medical missions but drew back mostly …

Ministering to Jesus

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

HAELLA PLANTATION, Papua New Guinea  — Rhonda Hamilton was having a rough day. So many people waited for treatment at the mobile clinic set up by YWAM volunteers that she chose to skip lunch in order to continue administering healthcare. She had also not slept well the night before and now exhaustion threatened. Yet Rhonda knew that whatever we do for “the least of these,” we do it for our Savior. A poignant reminder of this truth came in the afternoon when one of the volunteers manning …

Not Just Another Team Member

Jaime Gomez Stories

Most of us have probably heard the story of the man who was walking along the beach after a storm had washed up thousands of starfish. Left in the sun, the starfish were doomed. A bit further down the beach, the man spotted a young boy throwing the starfish back into the ocean one by one. The man approached the boy and remarked, “There’s so many here. You’re not going to make a difference.” The boy bent over, picked up another starfish, and turned to …

National Pride in their Games

Jaime Gomez News

The 7th PNG Games were held in Kimbe, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea recently. Ellie and Ashley, nurses from England and Canada, respectively, were on hand as part of medical team from the local hospital to provide medical attention to all the athletes who had traveled from across PNG to attend the biggest sporting event in the country. With medics in attendance at all the events, Ellie and Ashley were primarily stationed at track and field. Other categories of competition included boxing, rugby, soccer, …

Encouraging the Next Generation

Jaime Gomez Stories

During my DTS (Discipleship Training School) outreach to Kimbe, Papua New Guinea, my team and I, headquartered at YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link, had some wonderful opportunities to minister to children and youth. Our activities ranged from games and crafts to worship, prayer ministry, and Bible studies. Besides the normal struggles children and teenagers deal with anywhere, many PNG youth have to deal with the added tension of poverty and lack of opportunity for a meaningful future. As my team reached out …

The Weight of God’s Love for PNG

Jaime Gomez Stories

It was the third day of our Engage DTS outreach to Kimbe, Papua New Guinea. Our home and base of operations for the next month and half would be YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link. The local open-air market, a twenty minute walk from the ship through the tropical heat, held great potential for talking to and praying with people. There, vendors set up stands to sell their wares: colorful meri blouses, toiletries, flip-flops, multi-colored knitted bilums and many other things.   We …

A Lesson in Health Care Evangelism

Jaime Gomez Stories

For years, I was leery of mixing humanitarianism with Gospel ministry. The task of joining the two successfully has — historically — proved difficult. Anyone who has studied Christian missions knows that many organizations that started as Gospel-centered ended up scaling back their evangelism in an effort to focus on meeting people’s “practical” needs such as health care and education. But on a trip to Papua New Guinea in 2016, I witnessed a healthy marriage of “good works” and the “good news.” I saw that …

Healing, Preaching… and Teaching

Jaime Gomez Stories

Thousands of lives in Papua New Guinea have been changed by the medical care and the love of Jesus they find from teams ministering out of YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link. John Mark Wheeler and his wife Caitlyn, interim managers of the Pacific Link (PL), are no strangers to the physical and spiritual needs in PNG. After completing his DTS in San Pedro, Belize in 2013, God used John Mark’s passion for and training in the medical field during his time as …

Think Inside the Box!

Jaime Gomez News

THINK INSIDE THE BOX! For the first time in Youth With A Mission history, YWAM Ships now has a ship that can be used to transport shipping containers to isolated islands! Having such an amazing gift end up in the hands of YWAM can only be a work of God. The m/v YWAM Liberty has a massive cargo hold, a dental clinic onboard, the ability to carry landing crafts, and has a helicopter flight deck. These features now mean that with relative ease, our mission …

Three Islands in Three Days: Outpost Panama

Jaime Gomez Medical, News

YWAM Ships’ operating location, Outpost Panama (OP), recently held three different medical clinics in three days on three different islands. The islands that were visited have no electricity grid, no public water system, sanitation/sewer systems, roads or doctors in their communities. Outpost Panama offers routine doctors visits and consultations, different medications, and reading glasses; all of which are of great value to communities who do not have access to those items. The first clinic was held in Bahia Honda, a small family community in OP’s …

Medical Team Saves Mother And Child

Jaime Gomez Medical, Stories

VITU, Papua New Guinea — We had just arrived in the bay off the island of Vitu, PNG, where we were going to be based for the following week. On board with us were several people from the West New Britain Provincial Health Authority. We had been working closely together during these outreaches in West New Britain. Just after midnight, Helen (a local health worker, experienced midwife and maternal health nurse) and I were awoken to the news of a woman in labor on the …

DTS Outreach Update: VITU OUTREACH IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Jaime Gomez Stories

The outreach in Vitu was amazing. As we brought care to the people of Vitu, they blessed us in ways that we will never forget. More beautiful than riches were the smiles and love that they poured out onto us. As the week went on, we were able to bring water filters to many of the homes and community areas of many of the villages around the island. Most people drink only coconut water due to the lack of access to clean drinking water. We …

One Of Our PartnerShips Serving In The Marshall Islands:

Jaime Gomez Global

We had a very successful sail to the outer atoll of Namu and went to the islands of Mae and Loen. While there we did health clinics, diabetes prevention education, gave out reading glasses, performed children’s programs, engaged in men’s and women’s Bible studies and gave out a Bible to every household on both islands. 32 Bibles on Mae and 48 Bibles on Loen. We’ve continued to build relationships with the people we meet. Just recently we created new relationships with Torlick Anien, Alap of …

A DTS Story – Part Two: Restoration For The Heart and Soul

Jaime Gomez Stories

As the time for my Medical DTS  got closer, I assumed that I would be arriving in Kona and jumping straight into medical seminars and trainings about how to be a medical missionary. I was SO wrong. DTS was so full of love, joy, and excitement about life when you walk with God. It taught me how to heal my heart and how to see the world from a Christian Biblical worldview, something I didn’t even know existed before. I am so grateful that my …

Maiden Voyage Underway

brettcurtis News

I just received a phone call from the bridge of the m/v YWAM LIBERTY – an excited Ann Ford, our Ship Manager, told me “we are good to go”. They have received clearance from Ports North, and Border Force, to head to sea on their maiden voyage to Papua New Guinea. Moments later around noon local time they pulled away and headed for the channel of the Great Barrier Reef. The crew are bound for Kimbe, West New Britain with a brief stop into Alotau where they …

Adventure Comes From Risk: Saying Yes To Jesus

Jaime Gomez Stories

When my fiancé and I were first approached with an invitation to go to YWAM Ships Kona new ship, the m/v YWAM Liberty, to help get her ready for operation as a medical vessel, our reaction was to laugh loudly. The thought of packing up and heading out to Australia less than a month after we returned to Kona seemed ridiculous. We had barely settled back into our roles as base staff and we were looking forward to being back in our community. Once the …

Just A Few Hours

Jaime Gomez Stories

The m/v YWAM Liberty was facing a dire situation. The present captain was leaving on Thursday and there was still no replacement on the horizon. Recruitment was working in overdrive, all hands were on deck to try and find a new captain to serve on board the newest vessel for YWAM Ships Kona. The crew went to bed a couple days before the captain was going to leave and woke up the next morning to a surprise. Laurie Crew had flown in from Perth, Australia …

A Brand New Life For Darrel

Jaime Gomez News

Within the first ten days after the m/v Pacific Link had left Alotau, they’d completed more than 62 eye surgeries on board. One touching story that unfolded during that time involves a loving grandfather and a little boy named Darrel. Darrel, a 3-year-old who loves his grandpa more than anyone else in the world according to his nurse, had been born with very dense cataracts. He had only been able to distinguish between light and darkness his whole life. His grandpa said that he would …

YWAM Ships Kona Lauds Union With Samaritan Aviation

Raymond Billy Global, Uncategorized

EAST SEPIK PROVINCE, Papua New Guinea — The work of YWAM medical ships worldwide has attracted dozens of sponsors and partners. One of those is Samaritan Aviation. The nonprofit organization — which uses float planes to deliver humanitarian aid — has carried more than 125,000 pounds of medicine since 2010 to the most isolated parts of Papua New Guinea. It has teamed up there with YWAM Ships Kona to help meet the health care needs of those living in East Sepik Province. Samaritan Aviation president …
