Radical Living

Jaime Gomez Stories

Does God have your full yes?  God is more concerned with our sanctification in this life than we are. He is willing to lead us to uncomfortable situations, without telling us why, most of the time.  For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his …

When Running Away is Good

Jaime Gomez Stories

When I decided to do my Discipleship Training School (DTS) two years ago, it was a rash last minute decision. I was in an incredibly unhealthy relationship and felt like I needed to flee to the other side of the world.  Since I was living in Florida, the other side of the world ended up being Australia, where I did my DTS. Though my relationship with God had been rocky for the months leading up to my DTS, I still knew there was more to …

Vision Trip to Bougainville Proves Beneficial

Jaime Gomez News

Brett Curtis, President and CEO of YWAM Ships Kona, and Karen Curtis recently took a group of supporters to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville to showcase our activities to those who would want to invest in our mission and to inspire and cast vision for those who would want to be involved in future plans.  “It is beyond beautiful here, so remote and untouched, but so is the healthcare system. The plight of these amazing resilient people is very confronting. They never recovered and develop …

The Boy Without Speech

Jaime Gomez News

We just had our last day of medical clinics for the year this past Wednesday. We visited a small island off the coast of the Southern part of Bougainville island called Rantan. God could not have prepared a more lovely day for our clinics to end on. The island was small, lovely and peaceful with a total population of 80 people. As medical coordinator, I don’t always get time to just sit and engage with the children. Although, this particular day was running so smoothly …

Bursting Up Out of the Ground

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

One of the best parts about living mission-minded is watching God “grow His garden”. He’s the one who has been cultivating the hidden, below ground work from the beginning and the best part is, He allows us to participate in the process.  Sometimes we are the sower; planting seeds and praying for them to sprout. Other times we are providing the support, the daily watering, and the right amount of sunshine and nutrients for growth. It’s a laborious process and often, we don’t see immediate …

Stepping Into God’s Plan

Jaime Gomez News

YWAM Ships Kona’s sister ministry, the UofN Poipet is always up for a challenge. However, at the beginning of the year, the staff had a time of prayer and felt they should pioneer a Bible Core Course (BCC) immediately after pioneering a Discipleship Training School.  Even though this was a bit intimidating, they moved forward in an attempt to find an experienced BCC leader and Cambodian staff. After a few months, they came up with a grand total of ZERO experienced leaders or staff, at …

Brian’s DTS: From Understanding to Transformation

Jaime Gomez Stories

He said, ‘You need a change in your life; you need to go serve other people, experience different things.’ I said no for 2 years… Brian Park, Korean born but raised in Canada, heard about DTS from his dad who had heard about it from a family friend whose son had completed a DTS and had come back completely changed. Even though Brian’s father kept recommending DTS to him, Brian kept turning him down. When he heard about DTS, he was going to University, getting …

God Goes Before Us

Jaime Gomez Stories

Every day of outreach is filled with a new expectancy for what the Lord is going to do, which includes many unknowns. My team and I were in our third week of outreach in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Most of our time had been spent connecting with locals and playing with children, as well as preaching in the local churches.  It was amazing to see how hungry the believers were and it was a privilege to encourage them with the …

The Tale of the Tuna

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

Waking up early to watch the sunrise, I went to the outside deck. As I looked out upon the dark ocean that surrounded us, I could make out what looked to be an island not far off. As the sun began to rise, it became clear that we had arrived at Nissan Atoll in PNG. Now Nissan is kind of circular in shape with a lagoon in the middle with only two or three ways into it. Our goal was to make it into the …

Equipping those He calls . . .

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this”? Romans 9:20 Before we felt God calling us to go into missions, I always felt like I didn’t have many skills to offer. I felt extremely inadequate and I would look at many of the ladies at church that led different programs and wished I had what they possessed.  I always heard the line “God doesn’t call the equipped, He …

Can You Trust Him?

Jaime Gomez Stories

A year ago, I would have called you crazy if you told me I would move to Hawaii, one of the most expensive places to live and become a full-time missionary. I would have thought you were even more insane if you were to tell me I would then move to Canada to start a new YWAM base.  I simply didn’t think my life would go in that direction.  So then, why am I here in Canada? How did I decide to make these huge …

UofN Poipet – God’s Reminder

Jaime Gomez Stories

Ngan, a 91-year-old grandmother, accepted Jesus the first time our team met her. They had been evangelizing in a village and ended up at her family’s house. After sharing the Gospel and stories about Jesus, Ngan told them she believed in Jesus.  A month later, our team visited Ngan. She told them she was thinking about Jesus but confessed that she didn’t understand how to worship God outside of normal Buddhists traditions and had gone back to her formal Buddhist background. She thought she had …

OUR GOD HEALS!

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

We were in Lae, Papua New Guinea when God showed up in miraculous ways. Everywhere we went, we witnessed the Holy Spirit bringing a mass of healings! We had opportunities to preach and pray in prisons, open airs, the masses in the marketplace, and patients in the hospital. In the prison, Jeff and Trice, our volunteer staff and student, began praying for healing after preaching in their section of the prison. Men came forward with back pains, headaches, and more. Each man who received prayer was …

Bougainville President Tours YWAM Ships

Jaime Gomez News

The Hon. Chief Dr. John L. Momis, president of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB), visited the YWAM LIBERTY on July 30 accompanied by his wife, Lady Elizabeth. As they walked up the gangway, the courtesy flag of the AROB was already flying high on the mast. This flag was presented to the ship a few days earlier when the vice president and cabinet ministers visited the ship as part of the official launching of the YWAM LIBERTY to the AROB. The protocol of welcoming the YWAM team featured …

Making It Through The Night

Jaime Gomez News

Daniel, a sixteen-month-old baby boy, came to the clinic severely dehydrated. When someone is dehydrated, they tend to feel incredibly thirsty and will guzzle any water given to them; even if it subsequently makes them vomit. This was happening to Daniel. After a week of diarrhea and vomiting, he hadn’t been able to take on any fluids for days. Daniel was incredibly weak, and his body was shutting down. Our American pediatrician, Dr. Keith, quickly got to work assessing him and determined he needed an …

Mall Walker to Mountain Climber

Jaime Gomez Stories

During our outreach in Mexico, we were invited to come to a village of indigenous people. It was a five-mile hike one way. After we had walked for 4 miles, I was beginning to feel the strain. I was already not feeling well and this hike seemed to be never-ending. The gentle switchback path suddenly turned into a stair-like trail going straight up the mountain. I felt exhausted and overwhelmed by the time we began this leg of the trek.  “I’m a mall walker, not …

Our Ships in Papua New Guinea

Jaime Gomez News

Last week in Lae, Papua New Guinea, history was made. We retired the m/v PACIFIC LINK after an amazing 25 year run in YWAM. She started in Tauranga, New Zealand, then Townsville, Australia and finally Kona, Hawaii. What a strong steel lady she was. She has many great and beautiful stories to tell. It was a bittersweet moment for the YWAM community as our beloved vessel was decommissioned. She will be missed. We also commissioned the m/v YWAM LIBERTY! A passing of the baton to …

Racing Against Time

Jaime Gomez News

Christine, a ten-year-old girl had fallen from a tree the previous day. Tragically, she’d sustained a compound fracture to her left arm, leaving the bone sticking out of her skin. The young girl was in agonizing pain and at serious risk of losing her hand if she didn’t have surgery soon. Time is of the essence with this kind of injury. Ideally, compound fractures need surgery within a couple of hours to ensure full use of the limb and no further complications or infection. Unfortunately, …

Jenny is a Fighter

Jaime Gomez News

Jenny, an eight-month-old baby girl, struggled to breath. Her mother had brought her to the clinic and her raspy cry was heart-breakingto hear. Jenny had severe pneumonia; the same condition that took baby Isaiah’s life just four months prior. Isaiah had come to one of our clinics a little worse than Jenny. Sadly, he had succumbed to this common disease. The Papua New Guinea team pediatrician moved quickly to rehydrate Jenny and start her on antibiotics. The health center, however, didn’t have any oxygen. With …

“I Want to Walk”

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

As my team and I walked through Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, we entered a particular settlement where we saw some women. We felt like the Lord wanted us to talk to them. As we approached them, I asked one of the women how her day was going.  She replied with saying it wasn’t going very well. She was having a challenging day watching her sister’s children. When asked why she needed to take care of them if their mother was nearby, she explained that …

Emergency Eye Surgery for Young Girl

Jaime Gomez News

Ulamona, Papua New Guinea – The Pacific Link was in the West New Britain Province recently doing medical outreaches.  While on outreach with YWAM Ships, the Ophthalmologist on board, Dr. Wahamu, met a three-year-old girl with a traumatic eye injury from an accident. She was brought to the clinic by her mother.  Upon seeing her, he was very concerned. Usually, there’s no eye surgeon on the whole island and she would have had no hope of being helped. We, however, currently have an eye surgeon, Dr. …

Team Cameroon: Don’t Give Up

Jaime Gomez Stories

Team Africa has spent their time visiting schools, an orphanage and a nursing home in Yaoundé, Cameroon. They’ve been sharing God’s love, engaging in discussions about who He is and praying for those wanting it. For their team day, they all climbed up the highest mountain in Yaoundé! It was very challenging but a tremendous amount of fun! Here’s Olivia’s account of the day: On Monday, my team and I climbed Mt. Eloumden. Last week and this week, I was not feeling well due to …

Snapshots from Abroad: Local Partnerships Prove Beneficial

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

“I learned a lot about medicine, myself, medicine and God.” Marianna Duncan, originally from Texas, is a nurse who after moving to Hawaii a couple of years ago, heard about YWAM Ships Kona from friends at church. Papua New Guinea (PNG) was the available option for volunteering. Once she arrived in PNG, the ship docked in Madang and then the team would travel to serve in many villages including Bulsom, Mapour, Kubam, Bulu, and the like as well as some islands named Karkar and Bagabag. …

The Harvest in Cambodia

Jaime Gomez Stories

Every Monday we go out to the village to preach the gospel with our friend Jen and so far we have seen about 15 people come to Jesus.  God is doing so much out here and it’s such a privilege to be a part of it. One week as we were prayer walking, looking for someone to share with, we came upon a house with a women standing out front.  It seemed like she was waiting for us even though we hadn’t ever talked to …

Jaime Gomez Stories

The University of the Nations Poipet is one of YWAM Ships Kona’s sister ministries. Their first Discipleship Training School (DTS) is reaching the end of their outreach. Here’s a snippet of what the team has been a part of: We are nearing the end of our first ever DTS! Our team is currently on outreach in Indonesia; moving from village to village preaching the gospel as they go. On Monday night, they were in a tiny one-lane village, sharing at an event put on by …

Amanda in Papua New Guinea

Jaime Gomez Stories

I sat in the classroom, listening to the Discipleship Training School (DTS) students share stories from the outreaches they had just returned from. I was about to travel with my team to Papua New Guinea myself, so I listened carefully to the team that had just returned from there. One girl shared the story about her team visiting the local hospital and her personal trip to the maternity ward, where she had been asked to name a newborn baby.  I was really inspired by this …

What’s My Calling?

Jaime Gomez Stories

“So what are your plans here? What do you think God is calling you to next?” These are common breakfast table questions here at YWAM Ships Kona asked right after your name and where you grew up. It’s nice to be able to dive so deep initially with people but also is a difficult question for me to answer. Well ultimately, I’m heading to Heaven but there’s a good bit of life (hopefully) to grow, settle, and move through until that point. The question of …

Ending Bible Poverty in the Marshall Islands

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

There are some who passionately pursue the Lord’s will in all things. The ones who take their relationship with Christ seriously and will do anything that God asks them to do, even if that means leaving family and friends to be missionaries in another country.  Well, that’s us, a family of four who God asked to literally step out on the water (on a sailboat) and move to the Marshall Islands to share the love of God.  In April of 2013, we did a Family …
