It’s All About the Timing

Jaime Gomez Global, News, Stories

God has a way of having the best timing for everything.   Sometimes it can feels as if He’s saying, “Go Here” while other times it’s, “Just Wait.” Changing Focus Ministries, in partnerShip with YWAM Ships Kona, had this very thing happen to them when they prayed about going to an outer island for Christmas.  “We were praying about where to go for our next trip and felt God leading us to Lae Atoll. It’s a smaller Atoll in the Marshall Islands; with only 20 …

A New Ship

Nick Cizej featured, Fleet Support, Global, News

On March 11, 2019, an amazing vessel was giftedby the owners and operators of Stoney Creek Shipping in Tauranga, New Zealand. This vessel is perfectly suited to serve the isolated islands of the Pacific and was in operation until December 2018 serving Pitcairn Island and surrounding locations under contract to the British Government. Stoney Creek Shipping Ltd has been most generous with the donation of the ship, including fuel in her tanks at the time of transition. This vessel opens a new season for New …

Vision Trip to Bougainville Proves Beneficial

Jaime Gomez News

Brett Curtis, President and CEO of YWAM Ships Kona, and Karen Curtis recently took a group of supporters to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville to showcase our activities to those who would want to invest in our mission and to inspire and cast vision for those who would want to be involved in future plans.  “It is beyond beautiful here, so remote and untouched, but so is the healthcare system. The plight of these amazing resilient people is very confronting. They never recovered and develop …

A Brand New Life

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

The YWAM Ships volunteers had just finished a regular day of providing health services at a small village in Bougainville. The vehicles were packed with people and medical supplies. Everyone was ready to go back to the m/v YWAM Liberty for the night.  Then, out of nowhere, Swickley Tova, our ship engineer, ran up to the trucks with urgent news. A woman down the road was going into labor and needed medical supervision and transportation to the nearby health center immediately!  Our team quickly changed …

The Boy Without Speech

Jaime Gomez News

We just had our last day of medical clinics for the year this past Wednesday. We visited a small island off the coast of the Southern part of Bougainville island called Rantan. God could not have prepared a more lovely day for our clinics to end on. The island was small, lovely and peaceful with a total population of 80 people. As medical coordinator, I don’t always get time to just sit and engage with the children. Although, this particular day was running so smoothly …

Bursting Up Out of the Ground

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

One of the best parts about living mission-minded is watching God “grow His garden”. He’s the one who has been cultivating the hidden, below ground work from the beginning and the best part is, He allows us to participate in the process.  Sometimes we are the sower; planting seeds and praying for them to sprout. Other times we are providing the support, the daily watering, and the right amount of sunshine and nutrients for growth. It’s a laborious process and often, we don’t see immediate …

Stepping Into God’s Plan

Jaime Gomez News

YWAM Ships Kona’s sister ministry, the UofN Poipet is always up for a challenge. However, at the beginning of the year, the staff had a time of prayer and felt they should pioneer a Bible Core Course (BCC) immediately after pioneering a Discipleship Training School.  Even though this was a bit intimidating, they moved forward in an attempt to find an experienced BCC leader and Cambodian staff. After a few months, they came up with a grand total of ZERO experienced leaders or staff, at …

Overcoming What Lies Ahead

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

The greatest revelation I walked away with after my Discipleship Training School (DTS) was that I was created to be an overcomer. We all know that life always has challenges, but the joy of following Jesus is that we are empowered to overcome whatever lies before us. I was deeply impacted by this thought in the lecture phase of my DTS and during my outreach phase, I experienced this truth at work in my life. My team and I were on board the m/v Pacific …

The Tale of the Tuna

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

Waking up early to watch the sunrise, I went to the outside deck. As I looked out upon the dark ocean that surrounded us, I could make out what looked to be an island not far off. As the sun began to rise, it became clear that we had arrived at Nissan Atoll in PNG. Now Nissan is kind of circular in shape with a lagoon in the middle with only two or three ways into it. Our goal was to make it into the …

Equipping those He calls . . .

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this”? Romans 9:20 Before we felt God calling us to go into missions, I always felt like I didn’t have many skills to offer. I felt extremely inadequate and I would look at many of the ladies at church that led different programs and wished I had what they possessed.  I always heard the line “God doesn’t call the equipped, He …

Springtime in PNG brings healings, loads of ministries and medical clinics

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

The April DTS team of 6 students and 2 leaders were on board the m/v YWAM Liberty for their entire outreach. Their journey was focused around the city of Lae and the Autonomous Region of  Bougainville, Papua New Guinea (PNG). During this time, they participated in 2 full medical outreaches; one to the atoll of Nissan and one around various villages in Buka. Outside of the weeks dedicated to clinics, the team engaged in a variety of different ministry opportunities both on board the ship …

Marshall Islands: Partnering with the Ministry of Education

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

Our organization, “Changing Focus Ministries”, that partners with YWAM Ships Kona is doing some great things in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) to promote education.  For the month of July, on the island of Gugeegu, a neighboring island to Ebeye that is connected by a man-made causeway, we have been a part of a month-long summer camp called, “Spartan Summer Camp”.   It’s a collective effort of the Ebeye Ministry of Education, PREL (Pacific Resources for Education and Learning) and the University of …

Journey to Pinipel: The Open Ocean & Storm

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

Our most recent medical outreach on the m/v YWAM Liberty was to Nissan atoll. Nissan is a small isolated atoll (shaped much like Maui’s hook) right above Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. Often on our outreaches to these isolated locations, we will run mobile clinics to bring immunizations to the more isolated villages around the island, while the main clinic still carries on in the central location.  On this particular day, Emily, I, and our mobile clinic journeyed to the small atoll of Pinipel. The journey …

OUR GOD HEALS!

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

We were in Lae, Papua New Guinea when God showed up in miraculous ways. Everywhere we went, we witnessed the Holy Spirit bringing a mass of healings! We had opportunities to preach and pray in prisons, open airs, the masses in the marketplace, and patients in the hospital. In the prison, Jeff and Trice, our volunteer staff and student, began praying for healing after preaching in their section of the prison. Men came forward with back pains, headaches, and more. Each man who received prayer was …

Bougainville President Tours YWAM Ships

Jaime Gomez News

The Hon. Chief Dr. John L. Momis, president of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB), visited the YWAM LIBERTY on July 30 accompanied by his wife, Lady Elizabeth. As they walked up the gangway, the courtesy flag of the AROB was already flying high on the mast. This flag was presented to the ship a few days earlier when the vice president and cabinet ministers visited the ship as part of the official launching of the YWAM LIBERTY to the AROB. The protocol of welcoming the YWAM team featured …

Dignity Restored

Jaime Gomez News

With a scarf covering one side of her face, and her eyes cast down, Hannah hesitantly approached Rhonda, a nurse practitioner. After sitting down, Hannah pulled back the scarf to reveal a massive keloid scar on her earlobe. The scar tissue had built up after she had injured her ear over a year prior. Hannah recounted to the translator, Susie, that she was constantly stared at wherever she went and laughed at by children, Hannah’s embarrassment had forced her to cover her face. With the nearest …

Making It Through The Night

Jaime Gomez News

Daniel, a sixteen-month-old baby boy, came to the clinic severely dehydrated. When someone is dehydrated, they tend to feel incredibly thirsty and will guzzle any water given to them; even if it subsequently makes them vomit. This was happening to Daniel. After a week of diarrhea and vomiting, he hadn’t been able to take on any fluids for days. Daniel was incredibly weak, and his body was shutting down. Our American pediatrician, Dr. Keith, quickly got to work assessing him and determined he needed an …

Our Ships in Papua New Guinea

Jaime Gomez News

Last week in Lae, Papua New Guinea, history was made. We retired the m/v PACIFIC LINK after an amazing 25 year run in YWAM. She started in Tauranga, New Zealand, then Townsville, Australia and finally Kona, Hawaii. What a strong steel lady she was. She has many great and beautiful stories to tell. It was a bittersweet moment for the YWAM community as our beloved vessel was decommissioned. She will be missed. We also commissioned the m/v YWAM LIBERTY! A passing of the baton to …

Racing Against Time

Jaime Gomez News

Christine, a ten-year-old girl had fallen from a tree the previous day. Tragically, she’d sustained a compound fracture to her left arm, leaving the bone sticking out of her skin. The young girl was in agonizing pain and at serious risk of losing her hand if she didn’t have surgery soon. Time is of the essence with this kind of injury. Ideally, compound fractures need surgery within a couple of hours to ensure full use of the limb and no further complications or infection. Unfortunately, …

Jenny is a Fighter

Jaime Gomez News

Jenny, an eight-month-old baby girl, struggled to breath. Her mother had brought her to the clinic and her raspy cry was heart-breakingto hear. Jenny had severe pneumonia; the same condition that took baby Isaiah’s life just four months prior. Isaiah had come to one of our clinics a little worse than Jenny. Sadly, he had succumbed to this common disease. The Papua New Guinea team pediatrician moved quickly to rehydrate Jenny and start her on antibiotics. The health center, however, didn’t have any oxygen. With …

“I Want to Walk”

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

As my team and I walked through Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, we entered a particular settlement where we saw some women. We felt like the Lord wanted us to talk to them. As we approached them, I asked one of the women how her day was going.  She replied with saying it wasn’t going very well. She was having a challenging day watching her sister’s children. When asked why she needed to take care of them if their mother was nearby, she explained that …

Emergency Eye Surgery for Young Girl

Jaime Gomez News

Ulamona, Papua New Guinea – The Pacific Link was in the West New Britain Province recently doing medical outreaches.  While on outreach with YWAM Ships, the Ophthalmologist on board, Dr. Wahamu, met a three-year-old girl with a traumatic eye injury from an accident. She was brought to the clinic by her mother.  Upon seeing her, he was very concerned. Usually, there’s no eye surgeon on the whole island and she would have had no hope of being helped. We, however, currently have an eye surgeon, Dr. …

Snapshots from Abroad: Local Partnerships Prove Beneficial

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

“I learned a lot about medicine, myself, medicine and God.” Marianna Duncan, originally from Texas, is a nurse who after moving to Hawaii a couple of years ago, heard about YWAM Ships Kona from friends at church. Papua New Guinea (PNG) was the available option for volunteering. Once she arrived in PNG, the ship docked in Madang and then the team would travel to serve in many villages including Bulsom, Mapour, Kubam, Bulu, and the like as well as some islands named Karkar and Bagabag. …

Every Prayer is Heard

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

One of our Discipleship Training School (DTS) outreach teams recently helped out one of our sister ministries, YWAM Cap-Haiti. Here’s a snapshot from their time there: One of the team’s highlights was to distribute water filters. They went to different houses, talked to people, and found out who did not have access to clean water. Many people have to buy water or walk far to get it from a well or the river. Their first mission was pretty good and the people were very happy …

Former PNG prime minister visits m/v YWAM Liberty

Leinie Alambro News

Sir Rabbie Namaliu, former Prime Minister and patron for YWAM Medical Ships in Papua New Guinea, visited the m/v YWAM LIBERTY this week in Port Moresby. It was the patron’s first visit to the ship and he appeared struck by the size of the vessel in person. Namaliu was given a tour of the vessel starting with the big cargo hold that will be transformed in just a few months by medical containers that are currently being assembled all over the world. These sea containers …

Ending Bible Poverty in the Marshall Islands

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

There are some who passionately pursue the Lord’s will in all things. The ones who take their relationship with Christ seriously and will do anything that God asks them to do, even if that means leaving family and friends to be missionaries in another country.  Well, that’s us, a family of four who God asked to literally step out on the water (on a sailboat) and move to the Marshall Islands to share the love of God.  In April of 2013, we did a Family …

Snapshots from Abroad: Days as a Nurse in PNG

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

“My experience was amazing and would highly recommend getting involved.”   Lisa Maurette is a registered nurse from Brooks, Alberta, Canada. When asked by a friend about volunteering with Youth With A Mission (YWAM), she didn’t give it a second thought. The thing that drew her to helping with YWAM was the timing. “We only had a small window [of time]. We’re both moms, have jobs to negotiate and we were only able to go on a short term mission [trip] and it was preferable in …
