Hope in the Midst of Suffering

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

I had been in Kimbe, Papua New Guinea, for only a week, having joined two Discipleship Training School teams already ministering out of the m/v PACIFIC LINK — a YWAM medical and training ship. Now I found myself in the pediatric unit of the local hospital, feeling unprepared to minister. The staff had done their best to make the ward as cheerful a place as possible. Photos of animals hung on the off-white walls and they had painted the ceiling beams a bright yellow. I, however, didn’t …

Snapshots from Abroad: God’s Surprises for Us

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

“We were hungry. We were exhausted. It was 4 hours of driving mountainous terrain and an hour and 1/2 of walking through the mud with boxes. We waited on the beach. Michael started a fire so the smoke would keep the mosquitos away while some of our team threw some pitpit (cane grass) on the fire. I was ready to eat anything at that moment. We could hear the banana boats before they arrived. Little by little, I could see the shapes emerging from the blackness. There …

Ministering to Jesus

Jaime Gomez News, Stories

HAELLA PLANTATION, Papua New Guinea  — Rhonda Hamilton was having a rough day. So many people waited for treatment at the mobile clinic set up by YWAM volunteers that she chose to skip lunch in order to continue administering healthcare. She had also not slept well the night before and now exhaustion threatened. Yet Rhonda knew that whatever we do for “the least of these,” we do it for our Savior. A poignant reminder of this truth came in the afternoon when one of the volunteers manning …

Not Just Another Team Member

Jaime Gomez Stories

Most of us have probably heard the story of the man who was walking along the beach after a storm had washed up thousands of starfish. Left in the sun, the starfish were doomed. A bit further down the beach, the man spotted a young boy throwing the starfish back into the ocean one by one. The man approached the boy and remarked, “There’s so many here. You’re not going to make a difference.” The boy bent over, picked up another starfish, and turned to …

Songs for Manuelyne

Jaime Gomez News

We had just finished our lunch break, reluctant to leave the shade of the plumeria and palm trees sheltering the plank huts that made up the neighborhood know as Sector 21 in Kimbe, Papua New Guinea. Our team of medical professionals, DTS students and media team were halfway through our second day in this impoverished neighborhood. Margaret, our photographer, another team member and myself comprised the media team. I was looking for stories; someone with a debilitating ailment that only we could help or someone …

Marshall Islands Team Helps Give Back to the Community

Jaime Gomez Stories

For the past 7 weeks our team of nine has been working hard and ministering to different areas in the Marshall Islands. We have partnered up with the Sudernos, an amazing family of four who have been working long term for YWAM Ships in the Marshall Islands. They live on Ebeye, one of the main islands in the Marshall Islands, and take their 57 foot sailing vessel to reach more isolated islands. Our first week in Ebeye was spent celebrating Christmas and New Year’s while …

Bibles and Healings – Brazil Outreach Team Stories

Jaime Gomez Stories

One of our outreach teams for our July Discipleship Training School course went to Brazil for two months. Here are a few of the stories that came out of their time in South America! Our outreach focused on mainly building relationships with villagers by doing house visits. Although almost all the houses we visited believed in Jesus, a good majority did not know how to study his Word effectively. So our focus during the house visits was not only to get to know the people …

YWAM Ships Kona Wraps First Outreach of ’18

Jaime Gomez News

DUKE OF YORK ISLAND, Papua New Guinea — The m/v PACIFIC LINK completed its first outreach voyage of 2018 here last week. The medical and training vessel carried to this remote location dozens of volunteers who provided thousands of eye-care, dental and pastoral services. Rhonda Hamilton, a family nurse practitioner who co-manages the PACIFIC LINK with her husband, Rick, said the medical volunteers treated hundreds of people with high-risk diseases that included tuberculosis. “My last patient” of the outreach “was a very thin woman who …

National Pride in their Games

Jaime Gomez News

The 7th PNG Games were held in Kimbe, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea recently. Ellie and Ashley, nurses from England and Canada, respectively, were on hand as part of medical team from the local hospital to provide medical attention to all the athletes who had traveled from across PNG to attend the biggest sporting event in the country. With medics in attendance at all the events, Ellie and Ashley were primarily stationed at track and field. Other categories of competition included boxing, rugby, soccer, …

Encouraging the Next Generation

Jaime Gomez Stories

During my DTS (Discipleship Training School) outreach to Kimbe, Papua New Guinea, my team and I, headquartered at YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link, had some wonderful opportunities to minister to children and youth. Our activities ranged from games and crafts to worship, prayer ministry, and Bible studies. Besides the normal struggles children and teenagers deal with anywhere, many PNG youth have to deal with the added tension of poverty and lack of opportunity for a meaningful future. As my team reached out …

The Blind See and the Deaf Hear

Jaime Gomez Stories

When our outreach team left YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link for another day of ministry, it was already hot. That’s pretty normal for October in Kimbe, Papua New Guinea. Even the local people sometimes complained about the temperatures. At first, our plans for the day had been tentative but we eventually decided that we’d visit the waiting room of the local hospital, a place we’d been a number of times before in the past four weeks. It was one of the nicer …

The Weight of God’s Love for PNG

Jaime Gomez Stories

It was the third day of our Engage DTS outreach to Kimbe, Papua New Guinea. Our home and base of operations for the next month and half would be YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link. The local open-air market, a twenty minute walk from the ship through the tropical heat, held great potential for talking to and praying with people. There, vendors set up stands to sell their wares: colorful meri blouses, toiletries, flip-flops, multi-colored knitted bilums and many other things.   We …

A Lesson in Health Care Evangelism

Jaime Gomez Stories

For years, I was leery of mixing humanitarianism with Gospel ministry. The task of joining the two successfully has — historically — proved difficult. Anyone who has studied Christian missions knows that many organizations that started as Gospel-centered ended up scaling back their evangelism in an effort to focus on meeting people’s “practical” needs such as health care and education. But on a trip to Papua New Guinea in 2016, I witnessed a healthy marriage of “good works” and the “good news.” I saw that …

Palma Bahia – Part 2

Jaime Gomez Stories

(Continued from Palma Bahia – Part 1) First and foremost the sharing of God’s love was our primary plan for the outreach. We felt this could be done in a variety of ways, so after prayer and careful consideration we determined to do this through Bible teachings and prayer time, teaching English, preparing land for an additional school, sharing our resources and spending quality time in fellowship with the locals. Our team placed a large emphasis on our Bible teachings and prayer, as a relationship …

Palma Bahia – Part 1

Jaime Gomez Stories

On September 22, our Discipleship Training School outreach team slowly motored up to the dock of the tiny village Palma Bahia with an overwhelming sense of anxiety. A two-hour boat ride from the YWAM Panama Outpost had brought us on the cusp of our new home for the next eight days. Or so we hoped. The question weighing on the minds of all ten team members was, “Would we be accepted by this village?” Arrangements for our stay had been made in advance, but during times …

Medicine for Nason

Jaime Gomez Stories

From our home base on YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel the m/v Pacific Link, our team, consisting of four medical professionals, 13 DTS students, and a media team, had set up our mobile clinic for our first day of outreach. Our goal was to serve the needy of Kimbe, the largest of the many islands belonging to Papua New Guinea (PNG). People living in the impoverished or more remote areas on this island rarely, if ever, have medical care readily available to them. The location of …

Healing, Preaching… and Teaching

Jaime Gomez Stories

Thousands of lives in Papua New Guinea have been changed by the medical care and the love of Jesus they find from teams ministering out of YWAM Ships Kona’s vessel, the m/v Pacific Link. John Mark Wheeler and his wife Caitlyn, interim managers of the Pacific Link (PL), are no strangers to the physical and spiritual needs in PNG. After completing his DTS in San Pedro, Belize in 2013, God used John Mark’s passion for and training in the medical field during his time as …

Her name is Mini Libby

Jaime Gomez Stories

Can I tell you a story? It all started on a Saturday. I was about to do laundry when I received a message from my friend Nick, asking me to stop by his place because he had something for me. Without having a car to drive, I would need to walk. It’s not far but walking in the middle of the day in the August heat is way too hot. So I was going to wait until Monday but Naomi, his wife, was willing to …

Prayer and Evangelism in Chile – July DTS Outreach Update

Jaime Gomez Stories

Greetings from YWAM Pichilemu in Chile! We wanted to write a little update from the past couple of weeks here. We have been keeping busy here doing different types of ministry with the base. One is a market evangelism. We go to a morning market YWAM Pichilemu has in the streets every Wednesday and Saturday. We set up a table with flyers and little booklets about Pura Vida, which is a pool and gym that YWAM Pichilemu operates for the community, and ask people if …

The Journey Continues

Jaime Gomez News

“I was reaching out to YWAM and I wanted to staff a DTS.” Josh Risch, volunteer staff for the Bible Core Course (BCC), had been going on YWAM Kona’s website when he was told by 2 of his friends about another campus located in Kona, Hawaii called YWAM Ships Kona. His friend Jason had tagged him in one of Philipson Georges’s facebook posts. Philipson, a leader for the January Justice Discipleship Training School (DTS) at YWAM Ships Kona, had never met Josh before. He contacted …

The Journey of Josh

Jaime Gomez Stories

“I think I was in search of identity; just trying to figure out what made me happy.” Josh Risch, volunteer staff for the Bible Core Course (BCC) at YWAM Ships Kona, reflects on what drew him to YWAM. “I would say back then, I was more concerned with the opinions of others whereas now I am a little bit concerned with the opinions of others but my focus is more on God. I now have a better understanding of God as a Father figure and …

8 Things To Pack For Outreach in PNG

Jaime Gomez Stories

When my outreach location was revealed for my Discipleship Training School, I panicked for a second. We were scheduled to go to Papua New Guinea (PNG) for two months, and at that time we weren’t sure how much time we would spend on our ship, the m/v Pacific Link, or on land in a possibly remote location. At that point in my life, the only missions trips I had gone to were in first-world European countries. Showers were guaranteed, bedding was provided, and there was always …

Home Isn’t Always A Physical Place

Jaime Gomez Stories

After you’ve been a part of YWAM for a while, or any missions-focused organization, your idea of “home” may be a little different than the normal definition. Home might not be the place where you were born, or where you grew up, or even where you’ve spent the most amount of time in your life.  I recently visited family and friends on the mainland where my husband and I celebrated our marriage in our childhood homes. It was a wonderful time of refreshing and rest, …

Lock The Door

Jaime Gomez Stories

Comparison is sneaky. It will wind and twist its way into your heart when you aren’t even aware. It’ll set up shop, lifting up pieces of your heart and measuring them against someone else’s. Things that you thought were “good enough” are held to the light and every little flaw becomes an utter failure. The spirit of comparison is something that I’ve been feeling more and more aware of lately. Instagram has become the place where it feels most prevalent. Comparing others weekend adventures, their …

The Journey of Following God

Jaime Gomez Stories

Sitting down to join my fellow ladies at the local coffee shop, the thought hit me, “I don’t want to work here.” OH NO.  I had just turned in an application to work at that local coffee shop and, shortly after, realized I actually don’t want to be employed there. Before applying, I felt God had opened the doors for me to work part time. Since I had just joined YWAM Ships Kona as a full-time volunteer staff months prior, I was pumped when the …

We are a Team, a Crew.

Jaime Gomez Stories

Breakfast starts at 7 am with the crew. Conversations around the breakfast table consist of topics ranging from funny and interesting to sometimes gross and debatable. The common thread with all of these: everyone is welcome to participate. Laughter can be heard throughout the campus when punchlines are given and people find a common bond. It’s the comfort of knowing that regardless of nationality, tribe, culture and family, everyone has a place at Ships. For the long term volunteer staff, living in a mostly transient …

Think Inside the Box!

Jaime Gomez News

THINK INSIDE THE BOX! For the first time in Youth With A Mission history, YWAM Ships now has a ship that can be used to transport shipping containers to isolated islands! Having such an amazing gift end up in the hands of YWAM can only be a work of God. The m/v YWAM Liberty has a massive cargo hold, a dental clinic onboard, the ability to carry landing crafts, and has a helicopter flight deck. These features now mean that with relative ease, our mission …

Three Islands in Three Days: Outpost Panama

Jaime Gomez Medical, News

YWAM Ships’ operating location, Outpost Panama (OP), recently held three different medical clinics in three days on three different islands. The islands that were visited have no electricity grid, no public water system, sanitation/sewer systems, roads or doctors in their communities. Outpost Panama offers routine doctors visits and consultations, different medications, and reading glasses; all of which are of great value to communities who do not have access to those items. The first clinic was held in Bahia Honda, a small family community in OP’s …

Reaching Those Who Can’t Be Reached

Jaime Gomez Medical, News

The latest cycle of medical clinics run by YWAM Ships has come to a close. This was a historical time for our organization as for the first time, our newest ship, the m/v YWAM Liberty, worked alongside the m/v Pacific Link. The Papua New Guinean province of West New Britain received over 14,000 services to some of the most remote locations in the area. Dr. Theresa Lei, the clinical outreach coordinator for the West New Britain province, had few words to say except thank you …
